ALLAHABAD:
On the banks of the confluence of three rivers (the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati) millions assemble every year in Allahabad, a major town and place of pilgrimage for Hindus, ordinary men, women and mendicants. Popularly known as Kumbh Mela, the annual fair is a pilgrimage to the spot where, according to Indian mythology, gods kept the Amrit Kumbh (pot of nectar) for a while on their way to the heavenly abode. The pot, which rose from a mythical ocean when it was churned by gods and demons, was put down at several other places also all over India and each one takes turn as a venue for the Kumbh fair. The site of the fair is dotted with hundreds of tents and pandals, where pilgrims stayfor a full month's duration of the fair. The local administration provides all the necessary civic amenities to the visitors. Fire tenders, medicare centres and food corners cover the whole area. Policemen keep vigil and maintain law and order round-the-clock. This year too the fair remained free of any major untoward incidents. In the evening the fair grounds take a different look. Lighted up in the midst of darkness, the place reverberates with the chanting of mantras, devotional lyrics and the sermons from spiritual teachers (gurus). From the temples float all over the sounds of ringing bells and prayers by the assembly of pilgrims who come from afar and speak myriad languages of different regions of India.
