Collectivity is at the expense of individuality.
Culture is the product of a multiple form of constraints. A society has its own regime of constraints, its own types of discourse or manifestations that it accepts and practices to make them work for its own people and to enable the culture to be handed down to the next generation.
In a sense, collectivism and individualism are both equal in significance from the point of view of cultural identity. Abiding by constraints, members in a society come up with a mechanism that can enable them to make sense of interpersonal relationships, through which to maintain social harmony.
A society that is being externally imposed extrinsic values will experience hard time making intrinsic adjustment. Generation gap will slowly creep in.
