The second one.

I do not know what I was writing.  Perhaps my mind was elsewhere when I was posting last night.  I was meant to ask you which one (tone) you like: your rodinal vs my hc110

Ic.  I guess a lot depends on the combination of developer and film... i just helped my fd to develop his fomapan with stand, and the result is ... stunning to me.

But in terms of sharpness and the details in shadow, it seems to me that HC110 is a little bit better.

In a landscape shot, a sharper tonal contrast, in general, can give a shot a better aesthetic effect. This is especially true when the focus of attention in a shot is a little darker than the background, so it, in effect, stands out from the background.

In this sense, intuitively, the second shot attracts more attention than the first one for the darker tone it carries.

However, I prefer the first one. My choice is based on the focus of attention of the shots, which I think is the detail on the water surface. I was more attracted by the silver lines among the waves in the first shot. The tonal contrast is just about right there for the silver lines to show up. Those silver lines give the sea surface a good texture and dimension, invoking a very pleasant viewing effect. In addition, the tonal contrast among the sea surface, the hill, the sky and the clouds are just about right.

In Shot 2, the tonal contrast on the whole is a little bit over the top, but it is still a very pleasant-looking shot, especially when one takes into consideration the shore that the shot also captures, for the gradation in tone among the shore, sea surface, hill, clouds and sky is pretty obvious there.

In a nutshell, which being better depends on the entry point we have for a shot. That focus of attention dictates our interpretation and what we can come up with from the viewing.

I am actually not very pleased with the tone of my photo.   The clouds and the light is really the focus, and i would like to have it stand out more.

I was using my gr1v, and i wish i would have a red filter with me.

Mine is actually a film camera. I had GR once, broken after a year and need more than 3000 to repair (more or less the same as the price of getting a second hand one). So i gave up, and never turn ro Ricoh again.

Understood.

I have a Nikon D200 that I didn't use much after upgrading to D700. About two years ago, I had the infra red cutter over the sensor removed, thereby allowing more red light to be captured by the D200 sensor. Digital photography is not your cup of tea, but would like to say that by inviting more red light to the sensor, tonal contrast is very much enhanced in the resultant images. Maybe, a Ricoh GXR is a good way to start with. Remove the IR cutter and coupled the camera with a 28mm module, you will be able to play around with the set up like what you did in the past with your GR film body.

Here is a shot I took on a gloomy day. If it had not been the IR cutter being removed, the tonal contrast would not have been so substantial in the image.

Passed by Yau Ma Tei this afternoon with my Ricoh GXR and A16 module (appro 24-80mm equivalent in focal length) and took this.

A small and simple camera, and yet it aptly describes what it means by being simple and yet being beautiful

Tag sharp on the lady with head phones, from whom we were conveyed the city beat of a seemingly frozen dimension.
A shot that strongly conveys a sense of individualism.
Looking forward to more inspiration from you.
